Head coach Jennifer Rockwood praised her team's resilience, stating, "It was such a gritty performance from the girls tonight. It’s tough when you start out a game like that. Sometimes you just have to have each other’s backs. It was a little sketchy at first, but we found a way. We went into the half with momentum. It was a really great performance, and we made it really exciting for the fans.”
This victory was BYU's second consecutive come-from-behind win against Texas Tech, following a 2-1 triumph in 2024. Although BYU was outshot by Texas Tech, they scored the highest number of goals against the Red Raiders this season, with senior Mattyn Summers-Oviatt netting two goals, marking her first career brace and bringing her total this season to four.
In the first half, Texas Tech quickly scored within the first minute due to a mistake by BYU's goalkeeper Paiton Collins. However, the Cougars responded when sophomore Mia Goettsche equalized after receiving a cross from junior Mika Krommenhoek, who later assisted on Summers-Oviatt's header to put BYU ahead, 2-1, just before halftime.
After the break, BYU maintained their momentum. Summers-Oviatt scored her second goal in the 56th minute, extending the lead to 3-1. Texas Tech narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the 70th minute but could not equalize as BYU's defense held strong. BYU's Avery Frischknecht blocked a crucial free kick attempt in the 83rd minute, preserving the lead.
The match ended with a total of 19 fouls, reflecting the aggressive play on both sides. BYU’s next challenge will be against Kansas on October 22, starting at 5:00 p.m. MDT, and will be streamed on ESPN.
