SAN SALVADOR (El Salvador) – Sedentary lifestyles pose significant health risks, yet breaking these habits can be challenging, especially in El Salvador where physical education initiatives are limited. Local perspectives often link movement solely with sports or training, leaving inactive children—often with high screen time and poor diets—uninformed about the benefits of physical activity beyond traditional sports.

In response, FIBA Foundation Youth Leader Adán Escobar and the Federación Salvadoreña de Baloncesto launched the Hoops for the Future project, aimed at educating young children about the importance of movement. The initiative seeks to promote lifelong behavioral changes for healthier communities.
Hoops for the Future targets children aged 8-12, teaching them daily movements to enhance their coordination and motor skills. The project included a workshop with diverse activities designed to highlight various forms of movement beyond traditional sports. The children engaged in focus exercises, dynamic Yakudou sessions accompanied by music, animal movements, and basketball drills led by movement coach Omar Marroquin.
Escobar emphasized the workshop's multi-dimensional design, stating that “promoting a deeper, integrated movement approach to kids allows them to perform better at whatever activity they chose to practice and feel more confident with themselves.”
The workshop attracted 43 children and over 100 parents, promoting mobility training in a fun, non-competitive environment. For many, it was their first exposure to basketball, with each participant receiving a basketball and jersey to encourage ongoing involvement in the sport. Escobar remarked, “The workshop contributed to a healthier community by giving these concepts and exercises, along with the equipment, to be used by coaches, kids and parents for healthier and fun activities - a lifestyle for kids.”
Looking ahead, the team aims to expand workshops to additional communities across El Salvador, hoping to provide resources for local academies. Through Hoops for the Future, Escobar demonstrates that creating enjoyable and judgment-free spaces for movement can inspire children and communities to adopt active lifestyles. The FIBA Foundation remains committed to partnering with local teams to foster health and wellness through basketball.
