BEIJING, Oct 11 (Reuters) – Zheng Qinwen made history by becoming the first Chinese player to win the China Open, defeating French Open champion Mirra Andreeva in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, on Sunday. The wildcard entry Zheng, who has been recovering from an elbow injury that sidelined her for much of last year and early 2026, showcased her powerful forehands and swift winners.

"The feeling was incredible to win here in Beijing… it’s one of my dreams," said the 24-year-old Zheng, reflecting on her victory after the disappointment of last year's tournament when she was forced to retire due to her injury.

Both players exchanged early breaks in the match, with world number five Andreeva initially leading 5-4. However, Zheng saved three break points and turned the tide, breaking Andreeva to secure the first set.

In the second set, Zheng continued her momentum. Although Andreeva saved three break points at 4-4, Zheng persisted, breaking Andreeva again before hitting an ace to clinch her first WTA 1000 title and her first trophy of the year.

Zheng and Andreeva are set to compete at the Wuhan Open starting Monday, with Zheng aiming to break into the top 20 in the rankings if she maintains her performance.
