This announcement comes nearly a decade after Cardiff City Stadium hosted the women's Champions League final in 2017, where Lyon triumphed over Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw. For the 2029 final, the stadium will be referred to as the National Stadium of Wales to align with UEFA’s sponsorship requirements.
Mooney emphasized this event's broader significance, highlighting the FAW's ambition for the Women's Champions League final to be a catalyst for growth in women's and girls' football in Wales. WRU group chief executive Abi Tierney also praised the selection, describing it as a remarkable moment for women's sport in Wales and Europe, reinforcing the importance of empowering women in sports.
In addition to the Cardiff event, UEFA confirmed that Munich will host the men's Champions League final in 2028, followed by Barcelona in 2029. The upcoming women's Champions League final will take place at Parc Olympic Lyonnais in 2028. Other UEFA finals include the 2028 Europa League final at the National Arena in Bucharest and the 2029 Europa League final at the National Stadium in Belgrade.
