Zheng cited a right shoulder injury as the reason for her withdrawal, while Andreeva mentioned a schedule change. In a statement, Zheng expressed her disappointment: "I'm very sorry to share that I will be withdrawing from this year's Wuhan Open. Wuhan is where my tennis dream began, and the Wuhan Open is where I made my breakthrough at the WTA 1000 level. I have always looked forward to competing in front of my hometown fans. Since returning from injury, I have played a demanding stretch of tennis over the past months and a half. My body is feeling very fatigued after this intense run of matches. I look forward to returning to the Wuhan Open next year and stepping on to the court in my best possible form."
Iva Jovic, the next eligible player, will replace Andreeva on line 17 and advance to the second round. Anna Bondar, a lucky loser, will take Andreeva's original spot to face Mia Pohankova on Monday. Zheng's position will also be filled by lucky loser Camila Osorio, who will compete against Ann Li in the first round on Tuesday. An updated singles draw will be available.
Zheng's victory in Beijing marked her first WTA Tour 1000 title and her first singles title since Tokyo in 2024. Throughout the tournament, she defeated notable players including Shi Han, Anna Kalinskaya, Marie Bouzkova, Alina Charaeva, Elina Svitolina, Elise Mertens, and Andreeva in the final.
Having started the season ranked No. 160 in mid-June, Zheng's successful run has elevated her to a projected ranking of No. 23 in the latest update, with a 13-1 record since a qualifying loss in Toronto. Andreeva, who reached her fifth final of 2026, holds a record of 3-2 in finals and has secured titles at Adelaide, Linz, and Roland Garros. She qualified for the WTA Finals at Indian Wells, scheduled for mid-November.
Zheng plans to compete next at the Kinoshita Group Japan Open in Osaka, slated for October 19-25.
