Head coach Jon Scheyer has assembled the top-ranked 2025 recruiting class, which includes notable players like Cameron and Cayden Boozer, along with Nik Khamenia and Dame Sarr. This talent influx led Wilkins to redshirt last season, allowing him to develop his skills further.
Duke's recruiting efforts mirrored previous successful seasons, landing marquee transfers John Blackwell from Wisconsin and Drew Scharnowski from Belmont, while also retaining four of their top six scorers from the last season, when they earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. As the Blue Devils geared up for the 2026-27 season, Wilkins was still seeking his moment to shine amidst the team's high expectations.
Wilkins made his debut this season in a scrimmage against Belmont, contributing eight points, six rebounds, one assist, and two steals on 4-of-10 shooting as Duke secured a 102-62 victory. Given the depth of Scheyer's roster, questions arose regarding how Wilkins might carve out his role.
Assessing his potential contributions, it appears that Wilkins is likely to serve as a reserve 3-and-D wing. His height and versatility make him a strong defensive presence, capable of hitting three-point shots consistently. For him to earn more playing time, Wilkins may need to consistently deliver from beyond the arc.
In addition to his scoring potential, Duke will benefit from Wilkins’ length and defensive versatility, especially behind Sarr. After the scrimmage, Scheyer praised Wilkins for effectively utilizing his redshirt year. "Sebastian really has used that year in the best way because he understands what we're looking for," Scheyer said. "And he’s a great connector on offense...He just does a lot of what, you know, what’s called the little things, even though they’re not little. Sebastian does all of it."
Having honed his skills during a year when he was part of the last class of redshirts before the NCAA revised its age-based eligibility policy, Wilkins has shown high-level defensive ability, with expectations that his shooting will also improve. He is poised to be a significant part of Duke's rotation this season.
