Andrew Abdo, the new CEO of Tennis Australia, addressed a viral incident involving his mispronunciation of two prominent tennis players during the Australian Open launch at Rod Laver Arena on Thursday. The former NRL CEO, who transitioned to Tennis Australia earlier this year, mentioned players while discussing upcoming matches but mistakenly referred to Jannik Sinner and Elena Rybakina incorrectly.

During his speech, Abdo expressed excitement for the tournament, stating, "If you want to know what I’m really excited for, we are going to be hosting not only the world’s best current players, but I think some amazing emerging rivalries." He incorrectly named "Jacob Sinner" and "Robakina" instead of the correct names. The incident was widely shared on social media, including a post by Portuguese broadcaster Jose Morgado that quickly went viral.
Notably amused, former tennis champion Boris Becker reacted on social media, questioning the error. Following the backlash, Abdo clarified that the mistake was simply a slip and reaffirmed his familiarity with the athletes, asserting, “Of course I know that it’s Jannik Sinner.”
At 49, Abdo takes over for Craig Tiley, who resigned earlier this year to lead the United States Tennis Association and manage the 2026 US Open. Abdo is also stepping into the role of Australian Open tournament director, which was also held by Tiley. While his lack of direct tennis experience contrasts with Tiley's background, Abdo emphasized his leadership capabilities and fresh perspective.
He stated, "I think I bring a fresh perspective, energy and new ideas," and highlighted his commitment to innovation and stakeholder value. This launch event announced the addition of 700 new seats in a temporary grandstand at Melbourne Park and plans to manage crowd sizes more effectively at the upcoming tournament, responding to previous criticisms of long queues and overcrowding.
