Houston Soccer Defeats Kansas State 3-0 in Big 12 Opener

With this win, Houston improved to a record of 5-1-3 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12, launching 20 shots, the most they have attempted in a Big 12 match.

This match marked the Cougars' first victory against Kansas State, who now holds a record of 5-1-3 and 0-1 in the conference. It also signified Houston’s first goals scored in the history of this matchup.

By defeating Kansas State, the Cougars ended the Wildcats' undefeated streak, as the three goals conceded by Kansas State this game were the most they’ve allowed this season.

Houston struck first in the 14th minute with a long-range effort from sophomore Samira Minor. A potential Kansas State goal in the 20th minute was disallowed after review determined the ball had been knocked from junior goalkeeper Sierra McCluer's possession.

The Cougars scored their second goal in the 68th minute when fifth-year Laney Gonzales assisted Ella Morgan, who netted her first goal as a Cougar. Just two minutes later, senior Adelhia Ghonda added a third goal after receiving a pass from senior Danielle Shannon.

Despite Kansas State attempting 19 shots, the Houston defense held firm, achieving their sixth shutout of the season, which ties them for the lead in the Big 12.

Next, Houston will begin a three-game homestand, facing Iowa State at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Carl Lewis International Complex.
