This achievement highlights Fils's potential, which has been evident since he was a junior finalist at Roland Garros in 2021. Just over a month ago, he claimed his first Masters title in Cincinnati, defeating top-15 players Alex de Minaur, Flavio Cobolli, and Jiri Lehecka before facing Frances Tiafoe in the final. Fils won the championship in a thrilling three-set match, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0, which was notable for being the first Masters final contested between two Black players.
Fils expressed pride in the historic matchup, stating, "It’s good to share the court with Frances especially in a final like this. You know, not a lot of Black people are playing tennis. In France, it's a very closed sport. So if they can watch us playing some great final like this and they can dream about [doing that too], it's nice, I think."
