South Carolina and UNC Top the Latest Men's and Women's Soccer Rankings

South Carolina's men’s soccer team has achieved the No. 1 spot for the first time in program history, marking their highest coaches poll ranking since 2002. Following a 2-1 victory over Old Dominion, the Gamecocks remain the only unbeaten and untied Division I team this season, bringing their record to 7-0. They have also secured four wins against ranked opponents, showcasing their resilience and skill. Loïc Sany Kong, who scored the game-winning goal against Old Dominion, currently leads the team in goals and is a key player to watch.

On the women's side, the University of North Carolina (UNC) women's soccer team has jumped from No. 7 to take the top ranking. With a season record of 9-1-0, the Tar Heels recently defeated No. 2 Duke, overcoming a second-half deficit to secure the win. Senior Lilliah Blum played a pivotal role by scoring two goals in the match. Historically, UNC has been a dominant force in women's soccer, having a remarkable winning streak in the 1990s and consistently successful seasons since 1982.

In the men's rankings, Ohio State fell significantly after losing 4-0 to unranked Washington, dropping from No. 3 to No. 12. This loss marks Washington's second victory over a top-five team this season. Ohio State struggled during the match, especially after junior Nick Skubis received a red card, forcing the team to play a man down for most of the game. Their next challenge will be against No. 11 Michigan State on October 16.

Vanderbilt's women's team continues to perform well, remaining in the Top 5 with an 8-0-1 record. They’ve shown strength in conference play with a tie against Georgia and a win over Texas A&M, bolstered by standout players Courtney Jones and Sydney Watts.

Additionally, three new men's teams have entered the Top 25 rankings: No. 20 Pitt, No. 21 West Virginia, and No. 22 Rutgers. Pitt recently achieved back-to-back wins, while West Virginia is vying for its first national title and is set to face No. 1 South Carolina soon. Rutgers, with a storied past in the 1990s, has returned to prominence with three ranked wins this season, making them a potential dark horse in men's soccer.
