Alex de Minaur Prepares for Davis Cup Match Against Poland

Currently training in Brisbane with Australian Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt, de Minaur expressed that this match comes at a crucial time in his career. After reaching his highest ranking of number five earlier this year, he dropped to ninth due to his recent loss.

The Australian tennis player, who was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open this year, noted his struggles to capitalize on opportunities in major tournaments since then. While competitors like Alexander Zverev have won titles, de Minaur has found it challenging to maintain his form.

Following his disappointment in New York, de Minaur has been practicing intensely with his team. "Back here, around the boys, some good practice, a great team environment; it's been a great little change-up for me," he said, highlighting the positive influence of the team's atmosphere on his mental state. He believes this setting will help him recapture the spark he feels he has lost.

While dealing with losses has been challenging for de Minaur, he maintains confidence in his competitive edge. He is set to lead a team that includes doubles specialist Max Purcell, who recently returned from an 18-month anti-doping suspension. "Physically I'm great, and mentally I'm in great shape," de Minaur affirmed, dismissing any notions of stagnation in his career.

De Minaur first gained attention in 2017 when he reached the semifinals of the Brisbane International after receiving a late wildcard. He made his Davis Cup debut the following year at the same venue, narrowly losing to Zverev in a fifth-set tiebreak.

Poland will compete without their former top player Hubert Hurkacz, who is sidelined due to injury, as they are led by world number 73 Kamil Majchrzak. Rinky Hijikata and Purcell have been training together, indicating they will participate in the doubles match on Sunday. The complete draw for the Davis Cup matchup will be announced on Friday.
