With this victory, Chwalinska became the fourth player in the WTA 1000 era, since its inception in 2009, to win her inaugural tour-level title at such an event, following in the footsteps of Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu, and Victoria Mboko. Ranked No. 22 before the tournament, she will rise to No. 11 in the rankings on Monday.
She is notably the first left-handed player to claim a WTA 1000 title since Petra Kvitova's win in Miami in 2023. Chwalinska is also the third Polish player to reach a WTA 1000 final, joining Agnieszka Radwanska and Iga Swiatek, and is the first Pole to reach the final at the Wuhan Open.
During the trophy presentation, she expressed her enjoyment of the tournament and offered congratulations to Kartal, calling her an impressive player.
This final marked a historic moment, being the first WTA 1000 final contested by players ranked outside the top 20, and the first time since 2021 that players ranked outside the top 50 had reached consecutive WTA 1000 finals, following Qinwen Zheng's win in Beijing the previous week.
Chwalinska's journey to the title was remarkable, beginning the year ranked No. 146. She made headlines at Roland-Garros, where she was the second qualifier—after Emma Raducanu—to reach a Grand Slam final in the Open Era. Chwalinska's 2026 season has seen her accumulate 18 match wins, an impressive turnaround from just four tour-level victories before this year.
In the Wuhan tournament, she defeated Mayar Sherif, Marie Bouzkova, Iva Jovic, and secured a semifinal win against Maria Sakkari, achieving her first victory over a top 10 player by defeating Swiatek.
On the other hand, Kartal, ranked No. 170, made history as the lowest-ranked WTA 1000 finalist since 2009, surpassing Svetlana Kuznetsova's previous record. This was only her second tour-level event after recovering from a lower back injury.
Her path to the final included significant wins against several higher-ranked opponents, including Belinda Bencic and Elina Svitolina.
Chwalinska will take home $665,000 and 1,000 ranking points from the Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open.
