With this win, Gauff improved her record to 24 wins out of 28 matches at the WTA Tour against younger opponents. Her only loss to a teenager in this span occurred against eventual champion Victoria Mboko at the 2025 Montreal event.
Following the match, Gauff commended Sun's skills, stating, "I think she’s a little bit more mature than I was at 16. I think I got a little bit more frustrated than she did. But she’s an incredible player. I knew going in it was going to be a tough match. The junior career she’s had is incredible, and obviously she’s going to do great at this level. I think this is the first of many matches on this court and many matches that we will play against each other. I’m looking forward to the future matchups we have."
The match began with both players holding serve for six minutes. Gauff took an early lead by breaking Sun at love for a 2-1 advantage. However, Sun quickly broke back to level at 2-2 and held her serve to make it 3-2, indicating a tightly contested first set.
A pivotal moment occurred when Gauff faced pressure while serving at 5-4. An apparent winner by Sun was negated by fluctuating lights during the rally, leading to a replay. Gauff seized the following points to hold serve at 5-all and subsequently secured a break for 6-5 before taking the set in 58 minutes.
Carrying her momentum into the second set, Gauff won her next four games but faced a brief setback when Sun managed to break for 3-1. Gauff, however, responded decisively, winning the last three games to clinch the match.
In addition, Gauff retains the highest career winning percentage at WTA tournaments in China this century, with a record of 24-3 (88.9%). Her net play was instrumental, as she won 17 of 22 points at the net compared to Sun's 6 of 10, and achieved a solid ratio of 26 winners to 21 unforced errors.
Next in line for Gauff is the No. 13 seed Elise Mertens, against whom she holds a perfect 5-0 record, including a comeback win earlier this year in Dubai. Gauff noted Sun's strong performance, stating, "She doesn't have any major weaknesses. She can get a lot of balls back and play aggressive. She hits it real flat. Kind of reminds me of Jess [Pegula] a little bit. Her standout shot? I think it depends on the player. Today she was hitting her forehand line really well. Obviously she has a great backhand, too."
