Devin Carter, a former lottery pick, has signed with the Boston Celtics just days after being waived by the Atlanta Hawks. The signing took place on Monday, September 14. Carter, who spent the first two seasons of his NBA career with the Sacramento Kings, was traded to Atlanta during the summer in exchange for the draft rights to Alpha Kaba, the No. 60 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. Carter was selected No. 13 overall by the Kings in the 2024 NBA Draft after a standout junior season at Providence, where he averaged 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.8 steals, and one block per game. During his rookie year (2024-25), he averaged 3.8 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists, shooting 37% from the field and 29.5% from three-point range. In the following season (2025-26), his performance improved, with averages of 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 41.4% from the field and 26.3% from beyond the arc.
This acquisition represents a potential opportunity for Boston, known for developing young talent into effective rotation players. Although Carter has not yet secured a spot on the Celtics' 15-man roster, he will compete during training camp starting September 22.
