The loss prevented Shelton, currently ranked No. 4 in the world, from securing an early spot at the ATP Finals. Shelton, who celebrated his 24th birthday on Friday, would have qualified for Turin for the second consecutive year with a win. He must now wait to join Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz among this year's qualifiers.

The match was closely contested, with both players breaking serve three times out of eight attempts. Gea initially served for the first set at 5-4. Shelton recorded more winners, hitting 29 to Gea’s 25, and achieved seven aces compared to Gea’s four. However, Shelton also committed 27 unforced errors—six more than Gea. Ultimately, Gea won 75 percent of his first-serve points, in contrast to Shelton's 63 percent, and won 90 of the 169 points played. He demonstrated resilience, winning seven of the last ten points in the match.

The 21-year-old Gea is experiencing a rapid rise in the rankings, starting the season at No. 241. He has won his first ATP Tour title in Los Cabos and reached the fourth round of the US Open as a lucky loser. Since July, he holds a 12-2 record at the Tour level. Prior to this match, Gea's notable victories included wins over Top 20 players Jiri Lehecka at the Australian Open and Francisco Cerundolo in Los Cabos.

In previous rounds, Gea defeated fellow Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No. 30 seed, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, and Portugal's Jaime Faria 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-2. Shelton had progressed by defeating German Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 7-6(6) on his birthday. This defeat leaves him with a 7-7 record at the Masters 1000 level for the season.

Gea is set to play against the winner of the upcoming match between Argentine Francisco Cerundolo, the No. 21 seed, and Czech Jakub Mensik, the No. 13 seed.
