Wisconsin men’s basketball assistant coach Sharif Chambliss provided insights into the team's progress during a recent practice, emphasizing the challenges and optimism surrounding a roster featuring eight newcomers. In an interview on Butchie’s Den, Chambliss noted the team's fluidity, saying, "It’s still like Jell-O. You got to leave it in the fridge, let it sit, let it settle, and see how it’s going to shake out a little bit."

One standout player is Owen Foxwell, described by Chambliss as a “coach’s dream” due to his pass-first playing style. Chambliss stressed the need for guards to excel in reading ball screens, which have become crucial to the team's offensive strategy. He pointed out the importance of making the right reads consistently, particularly highlighting sophomore Zach Kinziger's development as he works to expand his game beyond his established shooting ability.
Chambliss acknowledged that while Wisconsin counts on Foxwell’s leadership, they also need other guards to maintain floor management during his absence.
Another player Chambliss noted for significant improvement is Will Garlock, who appeared in 30 games last season but is expected to take on a larger role this year. With the addition of Hofstra transfer Victory Onuetu, Chambliss believes the competition is beneficial for Garlock’s growth. He stated, “I think it’s been great for him to have Victory Onuetu here to go in there and bang against every day.”
The Badgers aim to strengthen their defense, which ranked 56th nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency last season. Chambliss emphasized that effective individual defense is the foundation for overall team defense, highlighting the importance of keeping the ball in front of each defender. He noted that successful individual defense reduces the need for help from teammates, ultimately enhancing collective defensive efforts.
With increased size and depth this season, including the presence of Eian Elmer and Onuetu, Chambliss remains focused on the team’s growth throughout the preseason. He encouraged fans to appreciate the journey of the new squad, stating, “Enjoy watching the process of our journey. We have an opportunity to be pretty good if everything is headed in the direction that we believe it is.”
