In the first half, Penn State pushed for an early goal but faced four offside calls within the first 20 minutes. Forward Aubrey Kulpa broke the deadlock in the 26th minute with a powerful left-footed strike into the top left corner, assisted by defender Hannah Jordan.
Although Penn State controlled possession, USC's midfield, led by Taylor Jenkins, held firm, keeping the score close. Freshman midfielder Emma Johnson nearly extended the lead shortly before halftime but failed to convert her open chance.
USC was stagnant offensively, failing to register a single shot in the first half. The Trojans' defense was solid, with goalkeeper Josie Biehl making crucial saves, including a close call on Kulpa's attempt in the 53rd minute.
Despite Penn State applying consistent pressure, particularly in the second half, USC was unable to create any significant scoring opportunities. Notably, USC utilized 19 different players but struggled to find their rhythm offensively.
Late in the match, Biehl suffered a big hit from Penn State forward Ellie Kocher, leading to Penn State's third yellow card. Kulpa attempted another assist shortly after, but her cross was blocked.
Kulpa's goal marked her fifth of the season and brought her total points to 13. Freshman Ellie Kocher also showed promising effort with three shots in her 38 minutes on the field.
