It is anticipated that approximately 1,000 referee and 500 commissioner applications will be submitted by National Federations around the globe. FIBA plans to release the list of licensed Game Officials by June 15, 2027. The new licensing period will commence on September 1, 2027.
The GOL program aims to enhance the quality of refereeing and provides a structured framework for FIBA and National Federations to plan and monitor the development of officials. This cycle will allow both current and aspiring FIBA referees to refresh their knowledge of officiating standards and fulfill required assessments to prepare for international competitions.
Building on the success of previous GOL cycles, which have led to an increase in female referee candidates and licenses, FIBA is committed to promoting women in officiating. The program includes dedicated allocations for female candidates and encourages the identification and training of younger referees.
To further support the long-term growth of female officials, initiatives such as the FIBA Referee Maternity Plan aim to retain female referees in the sport.
Successful candidates will be awarded FIBA licenses in Black, Green, or White categories, which enable them to officiate international games across various levels. There are currently no categories for commissioner licenses.
The GOL system has already been implemented in five cycles, resulting in around 800 international referees and 300 commissioners. For additional details and documentation related to the 2027-2029 cycle, interested parties can contact FIBA Referee Operations at [email protected].
