The 34-year-old female driver from Garden City, Kansas, is in custody, although officials have not confirmed whether the incident was intentional. Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses stated that the driver has been cooperative during the investigation.

Both deceased individuals were from McPherson, Kansas, and were not related. Among the injured are five children aged 5 to 9 years old, along with five adults ranging from 28 to 68 years old. Moses reported that injuries varied from minor bruises to severe, but were not considered life-threatening. Additionally, a 61-year-old woman was hospitalized due to “non-traumatic medical issues.”

Emergency calls began to come in just before 3:30 p.m. about a vehicle driving through a soccer game. First responders, including officers from the Kansas Highway Patrol and deputies from the Sedgwick County sheriff’s office, found the boy and the man deceased at the scene, while bystanders were aiding the injured.

The driver remained in the vehicle, accompanied by two children; one of the children is reportedly related to her, although they were participating in a different game at the complex.

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu expressed her sorrow on Facebook, stating, "I’m heartbroken by reports of a tragic incident at Stryker Sports Complex. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, especially the children and families involved.”

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has been monitoring the situation and offered state resources, extending her condolences to the victims' families and praising the first responders.

The city has indefinitely canceled all events at the Stryker Sports Complex, which features 11 turf fields used for various sports. The Kansas State High School Activities Association has also suspended its scheduled flag football state championship and other matches for the weekend.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the Wichita Police Department has requested anyone with video footage of the incident to share it with the investigation team.
