The 27-year-old player, currently ranked world No. 24, is capitalizing on a successful week in Shanghai to advocate for his inclusion in the Davis Cup team, which will compete in Bologna from November 24 to 29. While Davidovich did not elaborate on his messages, it appears directed at Spanish captain David Ferrer, signaling his desire to be considered for selection.
Davidovich is enjoying a strong season marked by significant achievements, including two ATP titles in Mallorca and Chengdu, making his case for the Davis Cup spot more compelling. However, his relationship with the Spanish team has a complicated history. Last year, Ferrer excluded him from the initial squad for the 2025 Davis Cup Finals, despite suggesting that Davidovich could still be a candidate as the fifth player. That communication left Davidovich feeling frustrated, especially since he was Spain's No. 2 player at the time and held a high ranking of No. 18. He stated his disappointment but respected the captain's decision.
Since then, Ferrer has expressed a willingness to reconnect with Davidovich, noting the importance of making selections that benefit the team’s overall performance. The previous year, the situation had snowballed when Davidovich withdrew from a tie against Denmark, citing exhaustion, leaving Spain with only four available players.
Now, with the Davis Cup Finals approaching, Ferrer must determine his final squad. Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Jódar are expected to secure the singles spots, while the doubles team of Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martínez is also set. This leaves one position, the fifth spot, which Davidovich is contending for alongside Jaume Munar and Daniel Mérida.
Amid the anticipation of squad selection, Ferrer announced he would step down as the national team captain at the end of the season, wrapping up his tenure with the upcoming finals. The upcoming squad decision could signify a turning point for Davidovich, who has made it clear through his performances and messages that he wants to represent Spain. Yet, it remains to be seen if he will secure a place on the team, as Ferrer reiterates his commitment to sporting-based decisions.
