Iga Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, has officially ended her 2026 season, describing it as one of the most challenging of her career. The Polish player failed to qualify for the WTA Finals for the first time since 2019, having withdrawn from the Ningbo Open on Tuesday due to a thigh injury.

The 25-year-old Swiatek announced her decision to conclude a largely unremarkable season in which she did not secure a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2021. Following her early exit, she dropped to ninth in the world rankings. Swiatek shared that she feels the need for a longer period of rest to recover fully before her return in 2027, stating, "The past few months, or actually the past couple of years, have been incredibly intense. I feel I need to rest and recover my body fully, so that's exactly what I will do - [for] a bit longer this time."
Swiatek's last Grand Slam victory was at Wimbledon last year. In the current season, she achieved only one WTA title, winning the Canadian Open in August, and ended the year with a 42-16 win-loss record. Recently, she lost to fellow Polish player Maja Chwalinska in the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open, marking only her fourth loss in 23 matches this year.
Swiatek expressed pride in her progress during the second half of the year and emphasized her confidence going forward. However, her decision to withdraw from the Ningbo Open hinted at the necessity of her early season conclusion. Given her high expectations for qualification in the WTA Finals, continuing would not have made sense, especially as she appeared to be in need of a mental break.
This season was marked by transitions for Swiatek as she parted ways with long-time coach Wim Fissette in March, later bringing on Spaniard Francisco Roig, the former coach of Rafael Nadal. While she experienced a notably emotional victory against Elena Rybakina in Toronto, concerns about on-court stress and anxiety persisted.
In her most recent match against Chwalinska, emotions ran high, prompting tears during her defeat. Swiatek candidly reflected that not qualifying for the WTA Finals might allow her to take a longer vacation, highlighting her need for time away from the competitive circuit before preparing for the 2027 season.
