On October 6, Sinner's team announced that he would undergo treatment for worsening knee inflammation and not return to the court until next season, 2027. The Italian tennis federation also issued a statement confirming that Sinner's absence will extend to major upcoming tournaments, including the Masters 1000 event in Shanghai.
While Sinner's injury raises concerns among fans, it is noted that he does not need to defend many points from last year’s Shanghai performance, where he exited in the third round. Following the announcement of Sinner's withdrawal, Alexander Zverev has secured his position to finish the year as the ATP's number one player.
