The deceased have been identified as Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, both from McPherson, Kansas, though they were not related. According to Police Capt. Aaron Moses, ten others, ranging in age from 5 to 68, were injured but their injuries are not life-threatening.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene, with Erica Case recalling that during halftime of her son's game, she heard the truck's engine revving followed by a series of loud booms. "I saw debris flying in the air... you could see matter flying as the truck was barreling through the soccer field," Case said, adding that the realization that those sounds were not gunshots but rather injuries was overwhelming. "I lost it because it wasn’t just adults. It was also children."
Amid the confusion, Case assisted a nurse, who was trying to reach the injured, by taking her son to safety. She noted that it took emergency services approximately ten minutes to arrive, but other attendees began helping the victims during that time. "There are a lot of silent heroes... having to do mouth-to-mouth or CPR on somebody that’d been ran over by a truck," she stated.
David Griekspoor, who was at the complex with his nephew, expressed that the sound of the truck reminded him of gunfire. "You look up, and you just see the truck going through a line of people," he said, recalling that his family members rushed to check on nearby children as he backed away with his nephew to safety.
Police have interviewed over 30 witnesses as they work to determine the cause of the incident. The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, was taken into custody but released after consulting with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. She has not been charged and remains unidentified. Authorities stated that the driver had two children in the vehicle, one of whom was participating in a soccer game at the complex. The investigation into the factors leading to the crash and relevant toxicology results is ongoing.
