Novak Djokovic's victory at the China Open last week marked his first title of the season and lifted him three positions to No. 8 in the ATP rankings. This performance put him in contention for a spot in the ATP Finals, but a subsequent first-match defeat at the Shanghai Masters has placed his qualification hopes at risk.

In the China Open final on Tuesday, Djokovic defeated Alex de Minaur, who retired due to a groin injury while trailing 7-6(3), 0-1. This victory marked Djokovic’s seventh title in Beijing, bringing his career total to 102, just one behind Roger Federer. The win was his first ATP title since he triumphed in Athens last November, reviving his season after a challenging year that saw him exit in the first round of the US Open.

Djokovic’s title at the China Open earned him 500 ranking points, allowing him to advance from No. 11 to No. 8. He now holds 3,480 points, which is 50 points ahead of de Minaur and 200 points behind Flavio Cobolli. However, he faces a setback following his loss to Hubert Hurkacz at the Shanghai Masters, where he fell 6-4, 6-3, marking his first opening-match loss in Shanghai after receiving a first-round bye as the 10th seed. This defeat, while defending 400 points from last year's semifinals, cost him a net of 390 points and dropped him to No. 10 in the ongoing Race to Turin rankings.

Following the Paris Masters, the top eight players will qualify for the ATP Finals. Djokovic's recent title moved him to the precipice of qualification, sitting ninth in the live race with 2,840 points. Remarkably, he technically occupies the last qualifying spot due to Jannik Sinner's withdrawal from the tournament because of a knee injury. However, de Minaur has overtaken him with 2,880 points, with Rafael Jodar closely following at 2,609 points.

Both de Minaur and Daniil Medvedev, who is eighth with 3,120 points, reached the Round of 16 in Shanghai, further complicating Djokovic's position. Djokovic plans to compete in the Paris Masters as his final tournament of the season, while his competitors have additional opportunities to gather points. A strong performance in Paris could potentially secure his return to the ATP Finals, where he last competed in 2023 and emerged victorious.
