The Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) announced the decision amid a transformative period for the national team in preparation for the 2026 Davis Cup. Recently, Ferrer confirmed he would step down after the Finals, making way for a selection process that generated various suggestions from fans about potential successors. López, who has been assisting Ferrer as a technical aide, has been officially chosen to lead the team from 2027 to 2029.

Known as 'Bulet', Marc López is well acquainted with the current roster and dynamics of the team. Ferrer has previously lauded López for his extensive knowledge and ability to manage the responsibilities of captaincy. López's integration into the team began during the Marbella tie against Denmark in 2025, where he quickly adapted to his role.

In his new position, López aims to build on the foundations laid during Ferrer's tenure. His impressive career as a player includes successful partnerships in doubles with Marcel Granollers, winning the ATP Finals, and reaching two Grand Slam finals. He has also been a vital part of the national team, representing Spain in 13 ties and contributing to their 2012 finals appearance.

López’s official tenure will commence on January 1, 2027, while Ferrer will continue to manage the team during this year's Finals in Bologna. The squad appears to be taking shape, with Carlos Alcaraz, Rafa Jódar, Pedro Martínez, and Marcel Granollers already likely to make the roster, along with a fifth player potentially being Alejandro Davidovich, following his recent victory in Shanghai. Exciting prospects lie ahead for Spanish tennis under López's guidance.
