WUHAN, China (AP) — Sonay Kartal of Britain advanced to the Wuhan Open final on Saturday by defeating former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko with a score of 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5). This victory marks Kartal's continued success in the tournament, following notable wins against Elina Svitolina and two-time Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini.

After her match against Ostapenko, Kartal remarked, "That was probably one of the toughest matches I’ve ever played. At times she is unplayable and you have to ride that wave. Mentally, this is one of the best performances of my career."

In the final, Kartal will face Maja Chwalinska, the French Open runner-up, who advanced by defeating six-time major champion Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1 in an all-Polish semifinal. Swiatek, the No. 7 seed, mixed 37 winners with 33 unforced errors, while Chwalinska, seeded 16th, had 19 winners and only seven unforced errors.

Chwalinska, who also reached the French Open final as a qualifier, is seeking her second career title against the No. 170-ranked Kartal, who has a highest career ranking of 44 and one singles title. Kartal has returned to competition after missing more than six months due to a stress fracture in her back earlier this year.

Swiatek hopes to improve her position in the Race to the WTA Finals rankings with the end-of-season event approaching in Indian Wells next month. Currently ranked 10th, she is looking to qualify in the top eight. The seventh spot was secured by Svitolina on Saturday, leaving one available slot.
