Svitolina, currently ranked seventh with 4,809 points, advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating American Ann Lee in straight sets. This achievement ensures that she will climb to at least sixth place in the rankings regardless of the outcome of her next match. In the live rankings, she has now accrued 5,024 points, securing her position as Karolína Muchová cannot surpass her after her elimination in Beijing. Additionally, Iga Swiatek is not a threat, as even a tournament win for her would only yield a maximum of 4,784 points.

Svitolina last held the sixth position on October 25, 2021. Her career-high ranking was third, a position she first attained in September 2017, and she remained among the top three players from 2018 to 2019.

This season has seen Svitolina's resurgence, with two titles already won: the WTA 250 tournament in Auckland and the prestigious WTA 1000 event in Rome, where she notably defeated top players including Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek, and Coco Gauff. Additionally, she reached the final of the WTA 1000 tournament in Dubai.

In Grand Slam events, Svitolina achieved her first semifinal appearance at the Australian Open and made the quarterfinals of Roland Garros for the sixth time. She also reached the semifinals in both Indian Wells and Toronto, as well as the WTA 500 tournament in Stuttgart.

In Beijing, Svitolina has matched her second-best result at the China Open by reaching the quarterfinals, where she is set to face China’s Zheng Qinwen. Their match is scheduled for Friday, October 9, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Kyiv time, as reported by Sport RBC.UA.
