Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano expressed confidence in Messi's ability to manage the travel, stating that the club fully supports his attendance at the event. Mascherano was quoted by ESPN saying, "Yes, he has this occasion (in Oviedo), and I'm very happy with the way he is handling it. The whole club agrees that he needs to be there because it is an extremely important award, not just for him but for his family too." He also noted that Messi will be available for the match against the Red Bulls.
The Princess of Asturias Award recognizes exceptional contributions in various fields, including sport, and Messi became the first footballer to receive this honor last June. Upon receiving the announcement, Messi expressed his pride, stating that the recognition goes beyond his performance on the field and encompasses his contributions off it as well.
Inter Miami currently holds the second position in the Eastern Conference and secured their spot in the 2026 MLS playoffs last Wednesday. In addition, Messi leads the Golden Boot race with 23 goals, four ahead of FC Dallas striker Petar Musa. Before facing the Red Bulls, the team will play against Atlanta United on Saturday.
