Russell, traded from the Washington Wizards to the Grizzlies in July, was waived last week after spending 11 seasons in the NBA. He appeared in 26 games during the 2025-26 season for the Dallas Mavericks before falling out of the rotation.
Originally selected by the Los Angeles Lakers as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, Russell earned his first All-Star selection in 2019 with the Brooklyn Nets. Over the years, he has played for various teams, including the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves, and returned to the Lakers and Nets before his stint with the Mavericks.
During his NBA career, Russell averaged 17 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game, with shooting percentages of 42.7 percent from the field and 36.3 percent from three-point range across 655 games.
The Shanghai Sharks won the CBA championship for the first time since 2002 in June 2026, a title previously won with Yao Ming on the team 24 years ago. The Sharks' roster also includes former NBA player Brandon Goodwin, while Hassan Whiteside, another former NBA center, is facing a potential league ban.
