In addition to Pegula and Anisimova, World No. 10 Marta Kostyuk and No. 15 Sorana Cirstea have also pulled out of the event. Anisimova has been dealing with a left wrist injury that forced her to withdraw from the Singapore Tennis Open, while Pegula's unspecified injury led her to similarly withdraw before the tournament.

Their absences mean Beijing was expected to be their first event since the US Open. Pegula reached the semifinals at the US Open, while Anisimova exited in the third round. Kostyuk competed in Guadalajara after the US Open, but Cirstea has not participated in any events since then.

“I’m so sad not to be in Beijing this year, but I need to focus on recovering from an injury,” Anisimova stated. “The fans in Beijing always give amazing support, so I can’t wait to be back next year.”

Last year, Anisimova won her second WTA Tour title at the China Open, defeating Linda Noskova in the final. She also secured three victories against top 15 players during her run to the title, beating competitors such as Katie Boulter and Coco Gauff.

Anisimova, Pegula, Kostyuk, and Cirstea join a list of other withdrawals due to injury or illness, including Madison Keys, McCartney Kessler, Zhang, Karolina Pliskova, Emma Raducanu, and Hanne Vandewinkel.

The main draw for the China Open will start on Wednesday, September 30, with qualifying matches held on September 28-29. The tournament features a 96-player singles field and is one of the final WTA 1000 events of the season.
