Unseeded Zheng Qinwen, who made an impact in Beijing, is among the players looking to replicate that success, alongside Ann Li, Maria Sakkari, Sonay Kartal, and Jelena Ostapenko at this final WTA 1000 tournament of the season.

Ann Li will face [7] Iga Swiatek, holding a 1-0 lead in their head-to-head record. Li recently overcame World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in a dramatic match, winning 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) after saving multiple match points. "I think on some of those match points I was about to lose my mind," Li remarked afterward. She maintained her momentum by defeating Janice Tjen in straight sets to reach her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal. Swiatek, in her 32nd quarterfinal at this level, has been performing strongly, having not dropped a set in the tournament thus far.

Maja Chwalinska will meet Maria Sakkari in another quarterfinal, with their head-to-head tied at 1-1. Sakkari returns to Wuhan after competing last in 2018 and aims to replicate her semifinal run from 2017. She achieved a notable victory over Marta Kostyuk in the second round, while Chwalinska had her best tournament performance, advancing by defeating Marie Bouzkova and Iva Jovic. Chwalinska recalled her previous encounters with Sakkari, indicating that she expects a tough match ahead.

Elina Svitolina takes on Sonay Kartal, leading their series 2-0. This is Svitolina’s first time back in Wuhan since 2019, and she reached the quarterfinals after defeating Liudmila Samsonova and Guo Hanyu. Despite some struggles with her serve and numerous unforced errors, Svitolina generated multiple break points. Kartal has shown impressive form, winning her third-round match decisively against Jasmine Paolini after coming back from a six-month injury hiatus.

The final matchup features Diana Shnaider against Jelena Ostapenko, marking their first meeting. Shnaider entered the tournament with low expectations but has performed exceptionally, winning all her matches in straight sets, including a notable win against sixth-seeded Karolina Muchova. In contrast, Ostapenko's path has been more challenging, narrowly escaping her matches against Daria Kasatkina and Jessica Pegula after dropping the first set in both. Ostapenko's experience includes a semifinal appearance in Wuhan in 2017.
