Andrew Abdo, the newly appointed chief executive of Tennis Australia, has announced plans to enhance the Australian Open in 2027 with increased seating and more shade for fans. Abdo, who previously worked in rugby league, believes that his perspective as an outsider will contribute to the tournament's growth and development.

The 2027 event is set to feature the largest temporary grandstand at Melbourne Park, adding 700 seats and providing triple the amount of shade for attendees. Abdo has also mentioned plans to limit day pass sales to improve visitor comfort.
In his inaugural address to staff, partners, and media in Melbourne, Abdo, who has taken on the role of tournament director previously held by Craig Tiley, mistakenly referred to men's world No. 1 Jannik Sinner as “Jacob Sinner.” He later clarified that he knew the correct name and noted Sinner's participation in the One Point Slam event despite his recovery from a knee injury.
Abdo's start has not been without challenges. His suggestion at the SportNXT conference earlier, to potentially shorten men’s grand slam matches from best-of-five sets, faced backlash from traditionalists in the sport. In response to the criticism, a statement posted on the Australian Open’s social media affirmed that “five-set tennis is here to stay.”
Abdo expressed his commitment to bringing a fresh perspective, stating, "I’m not an outsider to leading in sport," and emphasized a focus on growth and value for stakeholders. In 2026, more than 1.3 million tickets were sold for the tournament, an increase of over 100,000 from the previous year, but the event has experienced challenges such as long queues, particularly on weekends.
“We are ultimately really cognizant of the fan experience,” he said, acknowledging the need to balance ticket sales with ensuring a positive environment for attendees. In addition to the new grandstand on court six, plans include a two-storey structure around the shaded lawn in Grand Slam Oval.
Abdo highlighted the ongoing efforts to work with the government to create more space at the precinct to improve the overall experience for fans and avoid crowd limitations.
