Krunic sustained the injury during the second round of the US Open, where she and Danilina had to retire against Tatjana Maria and Zeynep Sonmez. The No. 3-seeded duo won the first set 6-1, but Krunic was unable to continue play late in the second set.
The pair qualified for the WTA Finals after a successful season that included a WTA 1000 title at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open in Doha and runner-up finishes at the Australian Open, BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, and Roland Garros. They were early leaders in the Race to the WTA Finals, thanks to a strong first half of the season. Currently, Krunic ranks No. 4 in the PIF WTA Doubles Rankings.
This season was set to mark Krunic's debut at the WTA Finals, while Danilina was preparing for her second appearance, having qualified for the event in 2022. The WTA Finals will take place from November 8 to 15 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, featuring the top eight singles players and doubles teams on the PIF Race to the WTA Finals Leaderboard.
