Boehly, who led the consortium that purchased Chelsea in 2022, has seen Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali assume a more influential role within the club. Chelsea announced there will be no alterations to daily operations or strategic direction following the sale.
This transaction allows Boehly and Walter to realize a modest profit from their investment. Along with their exit from governance and management, Jonathan Goldstein has also stepped down from the Chelsea board. The current executive sporting and commercial team will remain in place, with no plans for a new chairman.
Previously, the UK government mandated Roman Abramovich to sell Chelsea for £2.5 billion, coupled with a commitment of £1.5 billion in investments for the club.
Reflecting on his tenure, Boehly stated, "It has been an honour to serve as chairman of Chelsea Football Club... I am confident that Chelsea is well positioned for continued success under Clearlake's leadership." Clearlake's Eghbali and José Feliciano acknowledged Boehly's contributions, emphasizing their intent to invest further in the club's infrastructure and sporting performance.
In March 2025, Boehly hinted that the owners might part ways if an agreement on Stamford Bridge's future could not be reached. The club is weighing options between relocating or expanding the current stadium, with Earl's Court identified as a potential site. Boehly noted the importance of long-term planning for stadium development.
Tensions arose between Boehly and Clearlake in 2024, particularly regarding head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Despite wishes to retain Pochettino, he was succeeded by Enzo Maresca, who led the team to victory in the Conference League and Club World Cup before departing in early 2026, with Chelsea finishing 10th and missing European competition. Xabi Alonso has since been named the new manager, receiving full backing from ownership.
