Czechia Celebrates Tennis Legacy at 1986 Fed Cup Reunion

This summer also marked the 40th anniversary of a significant event in Czech tennis history, the 1986 Fed Cup final, celebrated during the Livesport Prague Open. The tournament took place in Prague, where 32 nations competed for the Federation Cup, now known as the Billie Jean King Cup, at the CLTK Prague club.

The event unfolded three years prior to the Velvet Revolution that ended the communist regime and was memorable for the emotional return of Martina Navratilova to Czechoslovakia, her first return since defecting to the United States in 1975.

In a star-studded final, Team USA, featuring Navratilova, Chris Evert, Pam Shriver, and Zina Garrison, triumphed over the three-time defending champions Czechoslovakia in front of a sellout crowd. Evert described the event as one of her career highlights, noting the overwhelming support Navratilova received, which overshadowed that for the Czech team.

Four decades later, Czech tennis legends Hana Mandlikova, Helena Sukova, Regina Marsikova, and Andrea Holikova returned to Stvanice, receiving a warm reception from fans. Sukova recalled that the Czechoslovak federation was required to allow all nominated players to compete, making Navratilova's participation significant.

Despite the historical weight of Navratilova's return, Sukova and Mandlikova focused on their competition. Sukova mentioned that while they initially sought to win, by the final match, the crowd was more supportive of Navratilova, which was disheartening but later seen as a celebration of tennis.

Mandlikova recalled feeling the tensions at the start of the event, particularly regarding how to acknowledge Navratilova. She insisted during her welcoming speech that it was important to recognize Navratilova’s presence as a matter of respect.

Ultimately, Evert defeated Sukova while Navratilova won against Mandlikova, securing the title for the Americans. However, the event remains a cherished memory for the Czech tennis community, as evidenced by the nostalgia expressed during the Livesport Prague Open.

During the reunion, the Czech legends reflected on their legacy and the significant influence of Helena Sukova’s mother, Vera Sukova, who was a trailblazer in the sport and had coached the national team. Although Vera Sukova passed away before the renowned 1986 match, her impact on Czech tennis was profound.

Helena Sukova credited her mother with starting the tradition of success in Czech tennis, highlighting the importance of parental guidance in fostering talent. Mandlikova echoed her sentiments, sharing her fond memories of Vera Sukova as both a coach and a person. She noted Vera’s influence on her own development as a player, marking the beginning of a longstanding legacy in Czech tennis that continues today.
