The decision comes as a surprise, especially following the Grizzlies' trade with the New Orleans Pelicans on September 8, where Hawkins was anticipated to be a key asset. Despite the potential for increased playing time—especially after the team traded guard Ja Morant to Portland—Hawkins' recent performance has raised concerns.

At 24 years old, the 6-foot-5 combo guard averaged just 13.6 minutes per game during his final year with the Pelicans, playing in only 51 games. This represents a decline from his promising rookie and sophomore seasons. Although he has yet to reach his athletic prime and is recognized for his defensive capabilities, Hawkins has struggled with shot selection, posting a field goal percentage of 37.4% over three seasons.

Hawkins is now set to enter free agency and will seek a new opportunity once he clears waivers.
