PARIS (AP) — Ryan Gerard is in contention at the French Open, shooting a 6-under 65 on Friday, which places him three shots behind the leader at the tournament's halfway mark. Matt Fitzpatrick, the world No. 4, took the lead with a second-round score of 64, totaling 13-under 129 at Le Golf National, the site of the 2019 Ryder Cup.

Jeff Winther is one shot back after also posting a 64, while defending champion Michael Kim, who led after the first round, bogeyed the last hole for a 68, dropping him to third place. Gerard, ranked No. 23, finds himself tied for fourth position. He was not selected for the U.S. Presidents Cup team by captain Brandt Snedeker, despite finishing third at the Tour Championship last month and competing strongly at the British Open.
Last week, Gerard briefly held a lead at the BMW PGA Championship but finished tied for 27th.
