Jayson Tatum Takes the Helm of Reconfigured Celtics After Jaylen Brown Trade

The decision to retain Tatum while parting ways with Brown comes in light of salary cap challenges, specifically managing two $300 million contracts. Brown's transfer to a division rival that has emerged as a contender, especially after acquiring LeBron James, places Tatum in the spotlight as he prepares for his first complete season post-Achilles tendon surgery.

"I’m ready to take on the challenge of leading a new-look version of the Celtics," Tatum said, noting the team has acquired Paul George, Mitchell Robinson, and Mike Conley Jr. in the restructuring process. Tatum emphasized the importance of awareness in leadership, highlighting that understanding one's role contributes to the team’s success.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla commented that the team's style will evolve rather than simply adjusting to Brown's absence. "It’s not as much what it looks like without one person but how we can maximize the strengths of our roster," he explained.

On the health front, Tatum reported feeling great 16 months post-surgery, having used the offseason to enhance his strength and explosiveness. "I’m excited and thankful for that," he said, referring to his recovery after missing Game 7 of the postseason against the 76ers last year.

George, now on the Celtics, stated he aims to support Tatum in every aspect of the game. Drawing from his own experiences recovering from severe injury, he sees his role as versatile: "Obviously, JT is the guy. I’m there to support him in all facets."

In a lighter moment, Robinson revealed he sought an apology from Mazzulla for past foul strategies used against him during the playoffs. "At first, we had a little issue because I’m like, ‘You’ve got to say sorry for fouling me,’" Robinson joked. After receiving the apology, he expressed enthusiasm for their collaboration, stating, "I feel like it’s going to be epic."
