Following this qualifier, additional regional tournaments will take place as part of the lead-up to the FIBA AfroCan, with the final games set for May 31. The main event will occur in Kigali, Rwanda, from July 2-11, 2027.
This qualifier marks a significant return for the Republic of Congo, which has not participated in a regional or continental event for over a decade. Cameroon and Gabon both competed in the second AfroCan tournament held in Luanda, Angola, in 2023.
Since the inception of the AfroCan in Bamako, Mali, in 2019, two countries have claimed the title; the Democratic Republic of the Congo secured the inaugural trophy, while Morocco took home the trophy in 2023. The tournament, featuring twelve nations, is dedicated to Africa-based players, with only two exceptions permitted, aiming to enhance international experience and promote basketball across Africa.
