The win marked Mertens' first triumph over Swiatek in three meetings on the WTA Tour, propelling her into her first WTA 1000 singles semifinal since 2021. Notably, Mertens has now defeated three consecutive Grand Slam champions, having previously overcome Jelena Ostapenko and Coco Gauff.
Mertens also became the first player to defeat multiple former China Open champions at the same tournament since Aryna Sabalenka in 2018. After her victory, Mirra Andreeva and Linda Noskova secured their spots at the WTA Finals in Indian Wells due to Swiatek's loss, marking their debuts at the year-end championships.
In terms of performance, Mertens showcased a near-perfect display against Swiatek, winning 87% of her first-serve points (33 of 38) and hitting 24 winners with only 11 unforced errors. Remarkably, she did not face a single break point, becoming just the second player to achieve this against Swiatek in a WTA main draw match, excluding Grand Slams, team events, and the Olympics.
After trading holds in the opening set, Mertens dominated the tiebreak with a score of 7-0. She also became the first player to win a tiebreak to love against Swiatek at the WTA level. Mertens maintained her momentum in the second set, converting a decisive break to lead 3-1, eventually closing out the match without conceding further opportunities to Swiatek.
Mertens will face local favorite Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals, who advanced by defeating No. 6 seed Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-6 (8). Mertens acknowledged Zheng's skill and the challenge ahead, stating, "She has a home advantage, but still I'm enjoying my time here in Beijing. I'm going to give 100% again."
If Mertens wins against Zheng, she will reach her first WTA 1000 singles final. Additionally, she and her partner Diana Shnaider are set to compete in the doubles semifinals against No. 2 seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani, following her singles match on Saturday.
