Chwalinska, who celebrated her first career title at any level on the WTA Tour, staged a remarkable comeback after losing the first set and falling behind in the second. The 25-year-old, currently ranked 16th, previously made headlines by reaching the French Open final this season as a qualifier.
Kartal, ranked 170th in the world, became the lowest-ranked player to reach a final at this level since 2009 and the second British woman after Johanna Konta to do so. Though she was unable to match Konta's achievement in winning the Miami Open in 2017, Kartal's performance secured her a new world ranking of 50, making her the British No. 1.
“I think I had my chances, and that’s maybe where the rust of six months off comes in,” Kartal said. “Overall I’m very happy with my performance. It’s going to sting for a little while, but I think the positives this week outweigh that result today.”
In the first set, Kartal showcased her strengths by breaking Chwalinska's serve early and maintaining pressure. However, signs of fatigue became evident, leading her to call for a trainer's assistance after the first set. Despite breaking serve to lead 2-0 in the second set, Kartal couldn't keep up the momentum as Chwalinska’s resilience shone through.
The match saw a brief delay due to Chwalinska breaking a shoelace, but she rallied to take the second set, leveling the match at one set apiece. In the deciding set, Kartal struggled to regain control as Chwalinska's tactics paid off, ultimately sealing her victory.
“This title tastes very sweet,” Chwalinska remarked after her win. “I feel like I still don’t realize that I won. It feels special, because after the French Open, I faced some tough moments.”
