Kovac has steered Dortmund to the top of the Bundesliga after four matches in the 2026/27 season, achieving consecutive Champions League qualifications. However, his approach has met pushback from fans who yearn for the high-energy style of former coach Jürgen Klopp.
Ricken, Dortmund's managing director for sport, emphasized the importance of results over style. "Of course, we want to play attractive and attacking football. At the same time, however, we will not give up our great strength in defence simply because, for example, we feel that a back four might occasionally help us more in attacking situations," he told Kicker.
He acknowledged the emotional connection many fans have to attacking football but pointed out the necessity of securing points throughout the season. "With more than 50 games per season, scrappy wins are just as important – and they bring exactly the same number of points," Ricken stated.
Dortmund will aim for their fifth consecutive Bundesliga victory on Friday when they face Werder Bremen.
