In a development confirmed by the ATP Tour, the 29-year-old Zverev's elevation to the top ranking is aided by an injury to Jannik Sinner, who will not return to play this season. Zverev will become the oldest player to achieve this ranking for the first time. Currently ranked No. 2, Zverev is set to surpass the No. 1 spot held by Sinner before the season concludes next month. He can mathematically confirm his No. 1 position as early as November 2, with final confirmation expected on November 23.

Zverev's path to the top was solidified when No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz lost to Zizou Bergs at the Shanghai Masters. The German player won both the French Open and U.S. Open this year and also reached the semifinals of the Australian Open, along with a final appearance at Wimbledon.

Prior to this year, Zverev's best Grand Slam results consisted of three finals. "It’s been a fantastic season for me winning in Paris and New York and knowing that I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true," Zverev said. He noted the significant effort involved in achieving this goal, particularly after recovering from a severe ankle injury he suffered during the 2022 French Open semifinal against Rafael Nadal.

Zverev is next scheduled to compete against Alexander Bublik in Shanghai on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Sinner has not played since defeating Zverev in the Wimbledon final in July, and he announced last week that he is withdrawing from the remainder of the season due to inflammation in his right knee.

Zverev concluded the previous year ranked No. 2 for the first time. His rise to the top comes amid serious allegations of physical abuse made by two former girlfriends, one of which has been settled through an agreement between German prosecutors and Zverev, while the ATP investigated another case and found insufficient evidence in January 2023.
