“I read the statement and now, like I do every day, I’m going to the Federation headquarters to work, to think about the Portuguese national team,” Jesus said. “I have nothing more to say.”
Previously, when first questioned about the statement, Jesus indicated he had not yet seen it as he was watching Portugal’s Under-21 match but promised to read it later. After reviewing it, he opted for a restrained response, which appears to indicate a desire to conclude the public debate as the squad gears up for what lies ahead.
In his statement, Ronaldo accused Jesus of breaking his word regarding playing time during the match against Norway, where he warmed up at halftime but did not come on. Ronaldo also expressed regret to his teammates for leaving the team camp, expressed willingness to face any sanctions, and ruled out retirement from the national team while suggesting the possibility of “one or more farewell matches.”
Looking ahead, Ronaldo's potential return to the team could occur in November when Portugal, already qualified for the next round of the Nations League with 12 points from four matches, is set to face Denmark on November 14 and Wales on November 17.
Jesus stated that Ronaldo would be called up for the next squad if he continues playing for Al Nassr and expresses a desire to return, highlighting that the final decision rests with the player. Ronaldo confirmed he would be available following the completion of any suspension he may face.
The suspension remains uncertain, as reports from ESPN and A Bola indicate that the Portuguese Football Federation’s regulations allow for a suspension of one to six months and a fine ranging from 500 to 1,000 euros for unauthorized departures from national team activities. Ronaldo mentioned he accepts the consequences of his actions and requested that the Federation not lessen any imposed punishment, but no formal sanction has yet been announced.
In the meantime, he is set to return to club action with Al Nassr, facing Al-Diriyah on October 9 in the Saudi Pro League.
