Iga Swiatek continued her impressive run at the Wuhan Open by defeating Ann Li 6-4, 6-1 in a match lasting 1 hour and 33 minutes. This victory marks Swiatek's first semifinal appearance at the Wuhan event and makes her the fourth player since 2009, and the only active player, to reach the semifinals in all 10 current WTA 1000 tournaments.

In the semifinals, Swiatek will face fellow Pole Maja Chwalinska for the first time at the WTA Tour level. The two players previously met as juniors at an ITF event in Stockholm in 2016 when Swiatek won 6-2, 6-3. They later achieved runner-up status together in girls' doubles at the 2017 Australian Open.

Swiatek expressed her excitement at having two Polish players in the semifinals, stating, "It's great that we have two Polish players in the semifinals. I think it means a lot to Polish tennis. So hopefully it's going to be a nice match. I'm really happy for Maja. She for sure improved her game this year, so I'll be looking forward to the match."

This upcoming matchup will be the first all-Polish semifinal at a WTA-level event in the Open Era, although there was an all-Polish final in Prague in 2024. It also marks only the second instance of players from the same country meeting in the Wuhan semifinals since the tournament began in 2014, following Zheng Qinwen and Wang Xinyu's meeting in 2024.

Swiatek has had a strong showing in Wuhan, winning all her matches in straight sets. In her quarterfinal against Li, she faced a competitive opening set but eventually dominated, winning seven of the last eight games. Li, despite her strong performance earlier in the tournament, struggled with 49 unforced errors and could not convert any of her three break points against Swiatek. This loss marks a missed opportunity for Li to reach her first WTA 1000 semifinal.

Swiatek praised Li's playing style and acknowledged the challenges she presents, noting their previous encounter this year. With this latest victory, Swiatek has reached the semifinals of a WTA 1000 event for the fourth time in 2026 without dropping a set, the first occurrence since her Cincinnati victory last season. A win over Chwalinska would send Swiatek to her first final in Wuhan and complete her run at all 10 current WTA 1000 events.
