"My season has to come to an end," Potapova stated. "Unfortunately, lately my body has been giving me more and more signs that it's time to stop. For me, that's the clearest sign that I need to take a break, give my body the time it needs to recover and come back stronger. See you in 2027!"
Potapova enjoyed a strong season on the WTA Tour in 2026, rising from No. 97 at the start of the year to her current ranking of No. 25. She had an impressive clay season, reaching the finals in Linz, the semifinals in Madrid as a lucky loser, and advancing to the fourth rounds at both the Rome Masters and the French Open. A significant highlight was her victory over defending champion Coco Gauff in the French Open's third round, winning 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-4.
However, the season was marred by injuries. Earlier in the year, Potapova played with a broken finger on her non-dominant hand during the Australian season. After Roland Garros, she also withdrew from her second-round match at s'Hertogenbosch against Zeynep Sonmez due to illness and later retired in Berlin with a neck injury.
At the recent US Open, Potapova suffered a left knee injury during a match against Mirra Andreeva, which required a medical timeout. Although she returned to the match after being taped, her performance was affected, and she ultimately lost.
Despite plans to participate in the Wuhan tournament following Beijing, Potapova will now focus on recovery in preparation for the 2027 season.
