Young players propelled the U.S. to victory, with MLS teenagers Cavan Sullivan from Philadelphia Union and Julian Hall from Red Bull New York each scoring goals, while 20-year-old Diego Kochen impressed as he made his first career start in goal.
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino remarked on the importance of the young talent, stating, "It's amazing to have these talented players that appear now. It’s a big moment because we need to protect them and support them. Our responsibility is that this group of talented players grow in the right direction."
Despite a youthful starting XI, the U.S. displayed cleverness and resilience on the field. After absorbing early pressure from Mexico, Hall scored the opening goal following a mistake by Mexico's goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, who failed to handle Gio Reyna’s low cross. Tyler Adams, named captain for the match, emphasized the significance of scoring first to gain control, acknowledging Mexico's skillful play but praising his team's patience.
After halftime, Sullivan capitalized on another error by Rangel when he intercepted a pass and executed an impressive lob from 35 yards out, celebrating with teammates. Sullivan later shared his thoughts on the goal: "These are moments you dream of since you're three, four, five, six years old. I probably shouldn’t have pressed the goalie, but that’s why you put the work in, and I was rewarded for doing so.”
The U.S. further solidified their lead when Sebastian Berhalter played a key role in Mexico receiving a red card after provoking Mateo Chávez during a foul. Late in the match, Malik Tillman scored the final goal following a defensive mistake from Mexico.
The USMNT’s next challenge comes against Canada on Tuesday at Allianz Field, where they will aim to maintain their momentum against a potentially tougher opponent. Adams concluded, "When these kids play fearless like this, that’s the most important thing. We want to come out there and allow them to show their quality, and they did that tonight."
