Joe Salisbury, the British doubles specialist and six-time Grand Slam champion, has announced his retirement from professional tennis at the age of 34. After returning to tennis following a five-month break due to anxiety, Salisbury decided to end his career and shared the news in an emotional Instagram post. He stated, "I’ve decided I’m retiring from professional tennis. I’ve been thinking about it for a while and am now very happy with the decision."
Salisbury described tennis as his lifelong passion, expressing gratitude for the opportunities and successes he experienced. He reflected, "To be able to travel the world and call playing tennis my job has been a dream come true."
His career gained momentum after attending the University of Memphis, with a significant milestone coming in 2018 when he reached the men’s doubles semi-finals at Wimbledon with Frederik Nielsen. After teaming up with Ram, he celebrated victories at the 2020 Australian Open and the US Open in 2021, 2022, and 2023. The duo also achieved the world No. 1 ranking in 2022 and won the ATP Tour Finals in both 2022 and 2023.
Additionally, Salisbury secured two mixed doubles majors in 2021, partnering with Desirae Krawczyk to win the French Open and the US Open. He also represented Great Britain in the Davis Cup and participated in both the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games.
In his farewell message, he noted the lasting relationships he formed during his career and expressed gratitude to those who supported him, including his parents and his tennis team. He concluded by mentioning uncertainty about his next steps but a positive outlook on the future, stating, "I know I have so much to look forward to and so much to be happy about right now."
