Jessica Pegula, who entered the top 100 in 2019 at the age of 25, has made significant strides in her tennis career since winning her first title that same year. In just three years, Pegula ascended to a career-high ranking of No. 3 and qualified for her debut WTA Finals, demonstrating that her late start was not a hindrance but a catalyst for her growth on the tour.

Now ranked No. 4 in the world, Pegula prepares for her fifth consecutive WTA Finals, set to take place at Indian Wells. Reflecting on her achievement, she remarked that making the year-end finals five years in a row is “pretty crazy” and something she never imagined. It illustrates her belief that players can improve considerably in various aspects of their game.
Pegula credited her mental strength and consistent performance for her success, emphasizing her ability to handle the fluctuations of each season and remain healthy to compete effectively. She expressed that reaching the finals five times is a significant honor and achievement for her.
Pegula’s consistency has improved markedly over the years. From 2011 to 2017, her win rate on the ITF/World Tennis circuit was just below 52%, and she did not secure any titles. However, since 2020 on the WTA Tour, her average win rate has approached 70%. Since her first WTA Finals appearance in 2022, she has won at least one title every year, with a current record for the 2026 season of 50-14, translating to a winning percentage of 78.1%, her best yet.
“I’m pretty shocked that it’s my fifth year,” Pegula said, noting her earlier struggles with consistency. With a strong performance over the past year, she reached seven consecutive semifinals, solidifying her reputation as a reliable competitor.
Her achievements continued with quarterfinal runs in multiple events, including the Sunshine Double and a second consecutive title in Charleston, extending her streak to 10 tournaments with at least an eighth-final appearance. Pegula was also a runner-up in Cincinnati, Berlin, and Washington, reached the semifinals at the US Open, and made the quarterfinals at both Wimbledon and Rome. She acknowledged her ability to rebound from tough losses as a key strength.
With her proven track record, Pegula has solidified her place among the top eight players on the tour and returns to the WTA Finals after successfully advancing from the round robin stage twice. Her best results at Indian Wells include reaching the quarterfinals twice, and this year’s event holds special significance as she competes on home soil. Pegula expressed her appreciation for the atmosphere and fan support in Indian Wells, recognizing it as a vibrant tennis community.
