John Isner Questions Alexander Zverev's Slam Potential Against Alcaraz and Sinner

Alexander Zverev has achieved notable success in 2026, winning two Grand Slam titles: his first at the French Open and a second at the US Open. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner secured the other two majors that year, with Alcaraz winning the Australian Open and Sinner capturing Wimbledon. Despite Zverev's accomplishments, some observers feel his victories are less impressive due to the absence of both Alcaraz and Sinner during those tournaments. Alcaraz missed the French Open and Sinner was out for the US Open due to injury.

Former Wimbledon semi-finalist John Isner expressed doubts about Zverev's ability to win further Grand Slams if Alcaraz and Sinner are fully fit. On the ‘Nothing Major’ podcast, Isner stated, "I don’t think so. We saw [Carlos] Alcaraz’s level after six months; we are going to get the [Jannik] Sinner vs Alcaraz rivalry." He, along with co-hosts Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson, voiced skepticism regarding Zverev’s future Slam prospects.

Querrey stated, "I don’t think anybody can. If Sinner and Alcaraz are both healthy, I don’t think anybody in the world can win a Slam. I will stand by that." Johnson echoed this sentiment, acknowledging Zverev's achievements but doubting his chances against both players.

Johnson mentioned that if Zverev were to become world number one, he might only need to defeat one of his rivals in the final, depending on how the tournament unfolds. Currently, Zverev is ranked second in the ATP rankings, trailing Sinner by 1,810 points but is positioned well to end the year as the top player in men’s tennis.

As of now, the official ATP Rankings are as follows: 1. Jannik Sinner – 11,500 points, 2. Alexander Zverev – 9,690 points, 3. Carlos Alcaraz – 5,560 points.

In terms of head-to-head records at Grand Slam events, Zverev is 4-6 against Sinner and Alcaraz, holding a losing record against both players.

Looking ahead, Zverev is competing with Alcaraz at the Laver Cup, although he was not scheduled to play on the first day of the event. Both tennis players continue to navigate their commitments as the season approaches the Australian Open.
